Jordan’s character is often seen as a minor character through out of the book, acting as Nick’s love interest and Daisy’s eccentric and successful friend. She is not included in the main tragedy and leaves rather unharmed. Although her character was still developed to mean something, as all characters are in The Great Gatsby.

First and foremost, her character is the only women in the book (and one of a very select few of the time) who got to escape the fate of becoming a house wife. For the time period, women of high class statues were trained to be married off to other wealthy families so they could continue to build this generational wealth and status. Their only options for the future consisted of marrying rich and birthing children, or marrying for love and giving up this life of luxury. Most did the former.

Jordan on the other hand, worked very hard to generate success in her own right. She became a famous athlete and made a name for herself. Consequently, compared to the other women in the books, she depends very little on the approval of anyone in her life. She doesn’t need to perform as someone who isn’t because she has nothing to gain from others that she cannot provide for herself. Others in the book tend to lean into the performative nature of the upper class to better fit in, especially if they come from new money. This perhaps also gives her, at least to herself, the justification to be immoral, often described as acting recklessly in the hopes that other’s moral compass will leave her unharmed. She might feel like this privilege is owned to her due to her special circumstances and hard work. Regardless, she is fulfilled within herself and doesn’t seem to mind what others think of her.

This is why I assigned Jordan the world tarot card. The world card is about fulfillment and completion. Through resilience and tremendous effort, Jordan finds her own completion.

"To encounter the World in your cards is to encounter a great unity and wholeness."
