A Pirate’s Legend

Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good. God would permit us to be pirates.” – Mark Twain

Another song that I love playing is A Pirate’s Legend. I know your probably thinking, why that as for this blog? I chose it because I recommended the song to my orchestra teacher, Mrs. Kathy Liticker, during my junior year. Also, the composer is Soon Hee Newbold. Plus, the viola section is not being heard enough in the orchestra. Also, make them shine. So one of my orchestra friends that played the solo was Ahn-Nika Cassidy. She is one of the few good viola players at LHS. We attended the same high school. However, it was her senior and my junior year when we both played the song. I also love the pirate theme aesthetic and bringing that to life. I love everything in the song.

A Pirate’s Legend” is broken into 5 segments of the song. First, “Calm Before the Storm“. Second, “The Jolly Roger“. Third, “The Storm“, Fourth, “Deserted Island“, and lastly to finish the story, “Treasure!”

Please listen to A Pirate’s Legend while reading About the Music.

About the Music:

Pirates, buccaneers, and privateers are a rich part of history that has produced myths, legends, and romanticized stories. A good pirate story is not complete without buried treasure, the dreaded Jolly Roger, and adventure on the high seas. However, the life of a real pirate was not so glamorous. Whether mercenaries, rebels, or thieves, pirates lived through rough conditions and stormy weather, and treasure usually consisted of grain, rum, or other material possessions. Many famous pirates met untimely and violent deaths, but their legends live on. They also use artificial harmonics for cellos that represent seagulls, and col legno meaning the stick of the bow on the string signifying clashing pirate swords.
