Invicta

So, I am an enormous fan of Soon Hee Newbold and the recent piece she composed, titled Elementa. Another song that she composed a year ago was Invicta. I love Invicta, and the best thing is that there is a solo for both violin and viola. Reading About the Music makes me love Newbold even more.

Please listen to Invicta while reading About the Music.

About the Music

When Maestro Chris Confessore and Newbold discussed a commission for the Brevard Symphony Orchestra, he recommended writing a composition for solo violin and wanted something accessible to students. With the events in 2020, Newbold really wanted to highlight the strength and resilence of the human spirit so she’s honored to have written the work titled, Invicta, which is Latin for “undefeated and unconquered.” The piece is not a true theme of and variations but there are some elements of that and it features some of her favorite techniques to show off the violin. The orchestra part can actually be performed by beginning players giving groups an opportunity to bring in a guest solo artist or highlight an advanced student. This composition hold a special connection and is written for some great musical artists she is proud to call friends. Invicta represents that throughout recorded history, one thing remains undefeated, the strength of the human spirit and the capacity to not only survive but to excel.
