Open Mic (September)

September 8, 2022

I went to an open mic event hosted by the Write Club. Write Club is a community organization that brings everyone together to read any original material.

So, tonight I went to the first one of the year. The first time going with some friends, I felt in awe about going to it. It was at the Second-Wind Coffeehouse on Campus Corner. I presented three pieces tonight, which were It’s Been a Year Without YouAs It Was, and 9Teen. Reading them, I felt relieved and in the moment.

I loved listening to other people’s work tonight. One that stood out was some works by Anna Drattell. I felt moved by her pieces and the emotions she brought to the table. After I got done reading my 9Teen, Anna walked up and gave me a huge hug. She was in my predicament where she didn’t feel a sense of belonging, and how I told her that OU is a judgment-free zone. I found out Anna was a freshman and felt motivated after telling her about my experiences at OU. For example, as previously, the environment at OU and a sense of belonging.

I felt motivated reading my material at Open Mic. I definitely will perform more soon.
