In reality, superheroes are doing drugs in their spare time.

In the summer of 2019, Amazon released a unique Amazon Original called The Boys directed by Darick Robertson. While your typical superhero like Batman or Superman are the idols of many young children and teens, the premise of the show is to show the realistic imperfections that many of the superheroes have.

A-Train

Main character Hughie, once a fan of A-Train(seen above), is a regular guy working at a regular CD store. His life completely changes when he takes a walk with his girlfriend. A-Train’s amazing power is to run faster than light, but turns out to be a curse when he runs physically through Hughie’s girlfriend, dismembering parts of her. Hughie, already upset, becomes enraged when he finds out A-Train has casually let this slide.

Compound V (The drug that enhances superhuman powers)

There are multiple similar situations to the one above. For example, heroes go to clubs, consuming drugs to make them stronger, or one of the main superheroes committing sexual assault. Though these crimes are horrible they always seem to be covered up and hidden. away.

Although I watched this T.V. show with a group of my friends, I couldn’t help but notice the other identity that all these heroes had. Trying to keep hold of their “hero” images, as you continue the show you watch the other side of them slowly become exposed.

It’s Kendrick Lamar! Or is it…

From one of my favorite songs this year, talented and lyrical rapper, Kendrick Lamar, released The Heart Part 5 on May 8th, 2022. Kendrick raps about sensitive topics, such as killings in a “gangster” type of life. He raps about the dangerous lifestyle, and how it has been normalized in today’s society. Kendrick described the deaths of many young black men as “culture”. He says in the first few lines of the song “I come from a generation of pain, where murder is minor.”, which basically gives a good summary of what the song is about.

Though it may seem weird to choose a rap song for my doppelgänger related blog, the song actually has a lot to do with the topic after looking at the music video. Watching it on Youtube when it first came out, it was very strange. What seemed like Kendrick Lamar, slowly started to change to other faces of influential black men in media. After reading the comments, I found out that the production used CGI to change his face. What seemed like a weird concept, turned out to have lots of meaning behind it. Kendrick uses the faces of men like Kobe Bryant, Will Smith, Kanye West, and OJ Simpson.

Kanye West’s face was used during the lyric “Friends bipolar, grab you by your pockets”, basically talking about Kanye’s bipolar personality, and how many people were after him for his wealth. When Kendrick takes on the face of Will Smith he says, “In a land where hurt people hurt more people.” This is a reference to when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars, after a joke made about his “wife” who had cheated on him previously. Kanye’s most used face is Nipsey Hussle’s face, where he raps a lot about death and killings, which can be seen as a tribute to his death in 2019 when he was shot.

Now the main question is “what does this have to do with doppelgängers and Doubles?”. I believe Kendrick used CGI to take over the identities of these famous and impactful men to speak on their point of views. He in a way, took over their bodies, to rap meaningful words about their ideas on what “culture” has become. Even in the beginning of the music video, the first image displayed to the viewer is a black screen with the quote “I am. All of us.” From my perspective, I see this single screen to be the entire meaning for the music video. Kendrick wanted to explain what “gang” lifestyle has become and how media has made people insensitive to violence and drama. And he does this effectively by taking the identity of these men and explaining their perspective on these conflicts.

You don’t actually hate your parents, you’re just a teen.

When looking for my piece of media for my first blog, my mind went straight to the movie Coraline, directed by Henry Selick. Coraline features multiple forms of doppelgängers/opposites in its sceneries and characters.

Coraline, who is the new kid in town, has moved into a new house with her parents, who couldn’t care less about what Coraline is up to. With an inattentive mom and dad, Coraline often explores the new town, meeting other neighbors such as her new friend Wybie, who doesn’t know when to stop talking, and Miss. Spink and Miss Forcible are retired actresses wanting to get back on the stage. Exploring the house as well, lots of work is put into the details of the old house. The plumbing and heating are broken, and much of the house’s decor is made up of pale yellows, blacks, and grays. These flaws in the town eventually foreshadow what doppelgängers have to do with the movie because they tend to be something that a character wants to be.

Desperately wanting to leave the town, it is emphasized that Coraline has always wanted to leave. Entering a secret small door within one of the rooms, she finds herself in an entirely new world. In this world, everything seemed to be the opposite of what her current life was. The house was colorful and had a wonderful aroma from the food being cooked. Around the town, Coraline meets her neighbors and friends but they are the opposite of what they were previously. The two women are shining stars performing on stage, and Wybie’s mouth is sown shut, unable to make the unnecessary commentary he used to.

Miss Spink and Miss Forceable

Though everything in this new world seems wonderful, there are always slight differences from the real world, similar to most media when doppelgängers appear. The most obvious one is that everyone’s eyes are now buttons. Along with the eerie visuals, the mom is forcibly positive and loving, and it comes to an extreme level that is frightening and psychotic.

Doppelgängers played a big part in this movie because it shows an alternative reality where the people and places are what Coraline has always wanted them to be. While this reality could be permanent, Coraline realizes the consequences of living this new life, finally understanding why she should be thankful for her original parents and friends. From this movie, I think that Selick tried to use doubles as a life lesson for kids, helping them to understand that they don’t really “hate” their parents or life, and to be thankful for these things.
