Teaching Philosophy

I believe that learning is a continuous process and that knowledge as a social construct is diverse and changes over time. Even though I am the teacher, I recognize that students also have ideas and viewpoints that contribute to the overall learning experience. With that in mind, I aspire to create a collaborative, inclusive learning environment that promotes the diversity of our knowledge and encourages active participation by appreciating different perspectives on issues discussed in the classroom. I acknowledge that students may have different and unique learning styles; therefore, as an instructor, I consider utilizing different learning methods in the classroom as important to ensure no student feels left out. Apart from reading and writing, my teaching incorporates the use of relevant technologies, visual resources, inviting professional guest speakers and engaging in practical activities e.g., simulation games that prepare students for their professional lives. As part of the learning process, I believe student assessment to be more than assigning a grade but as a way of communicating to students through thoughtful feedback aimed at improving the student’s motivation for learning. To continually develop students’ learning experience, I also value students’ feedback as a way of improving my teaching approach, course content and overall classroom experience.
