This week, I started reading the book “Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen” by Jose Antonio Vargas. He journals about his experience leaving his mother and moving to America from the Philippines. His memoir explores the complexities surrounding the American Dream, particularly for undocumented immigrants. He sheds light on the harsh realities faced by millions living in the shadows of America, striving for a better life while navigating a system that often denies them basic rights and opportunities. Vargas challenges the conventional notion of the American Dream as a straightforward path to success, highlighting the barriers and injustices encountered by undocumented individuals pursuing their aspirations. His story underscores the resilience and determination of immigrants who contribute to the fabric of American society despite facing immense challenges. In doing so, “Dear America” serves as a powerful reminder of the inclusive ideals upon which the American Dream is founded, emphasizing the importance of empathy, compassion, and equal opportunity for all, regardless of immigration status.
I definitely recommend you all to read it!
