As of now my proposed topic for the unit three research project is the parallels of the original surf drama/movie Point Break and it’s predecessor Chasing Mavericks. I will be writing about how the plot lines are almost the exact same stories. While I have been looking into research for my paper, I have realized that these surf movies set up a false identity of all surfers. The message that most surf films send to the viewer is that surfers only care about the art of surfing and looking for that perfect set of waves, but in reality surfing has become very mainstream and a business.
The early surfers were major environmentalist that cared about the reefs and did not want to damage them in any way. Now, surfing has evolved into big wave tow surfing and what sponsorships you can get to promote surfing products. Now, many big name surf brands have stepped away from caring about the ocean and are releasing products that do more harm to the ocean. A big product that surfers are promoting in today’s world is Fu wax which is board wax that contains petroleum by-products which is very harmful to the environment. For most surfers, they see big names like “Kai Lenny,” using Fu Wax and decide I need to buy this instead of looking at safe and sustainable surf wax.
As of now only a handful of surfers actually use promote sustainable surf products as they receive less money from these brands.
