As I am now a sophomore, I have noticed there still seems to be a hierarchy of the social chain of the students at OU. As I left high school, I did not think that would exist at a college, but I have started to realize that it still is present on our campus. Although I do not think that it as bad as the hierarchies back in high school, it still very easy to see as a student.
Before starting my list of the social groups on campus and their rank I would like to preface that I am not judging anyone nor do I believe that these rankings really matter. These rankings and groups are just things I have noticed over my near three semesters here at OU. The way I see this hierarchy starts with top of the pyramid with our beloved athletes. Anyone from football to even the golf team ranks at the top of the student body. In a distant second and third comes the Greek Life members, but this is an interesting group as there are two types of Greek Life. The fifty-seven fraternities and sororities that make up this second and third place on this pyramid are divided into the “top houses,” and the, “bottom houses.” The top houses consist of the wealthiest, prettiest and most annoying students on this campus, while the bottom houses consist of the kids who do not party as hard as the others and may drive a Toyota Camry instead of the new Chevy truck or the 80,000-dollar German Sports car. And lastly we have you and me the common folk where, some of the “lower-tier sororities and fraternities,” may bleed into this group. We are the people who emphasize our education and are here for the ultimate goal of graduating and preparing ourselves for or job, but will partake in going school events like OU Texas.
Overall, I think the whole idea of social hierarchies are dumb and unnecessary but are ultimately inevitable. These things will always exist and we as students should not worry about it.
