Social media has become the biggest blessing and curse to today’s teenagers and society. On one hand every time we open an app we get to see some of our closest friends post and can keep in touch with others, but on the other hand we can get “fomo” (fear of missing out) and feel less of ourselves according to social media standards. For me being four states away from my home state, I have found social media to be very helpful in the way that I can kind of connect with my friends back home. I love opening up social media apps and seeing their post from their various colleges and from back home, but I will say that occasionally it can be very sad seeing that my friends are doing things back home without me. While I cannot speak for everyone, I personally can get sad when I see my friends back home doing activities without me.
Another way that social media is harming teenagers today is through causing unrealistic expectations of how people’s bodies should look. Through social media post, teenagers today are believing that they should all look like supermodels are fitness influencers leading to many developing eating disorders.
While social media makes us feel closer to friends and others, but is it really worth the toll it takes on our mental health?
