When reimagining The Great Gatsby in a Sci-fi/Dystopian context, it is important to preserve the essence of the original setting or mirror it acceptably. Given the vast difference in time and technology, my approach will focus on reflecting the atmosphere crafted by Fitzgerald, aiming to replicate the original environment rather than transforming it entirely.
Frauds in Green, my adaptation of The Great Gatsby, takes place in the year 2236. This follows roughly a century after humanity ventured beyond the asteroid belt, progressing into a series of conflicts that led to the eventual independence of the ‘Outer Orbit Territories’. The Inner Orbit Territories symbolize the historical regions of Europe, Asia, and Africa, while the Outer Orbit Territories represent the emerging landscapes of America.
- This separation and identification of a ‘New World VS Old World’ stereotype will lay the foundations of Frauds in Green‘s connection to the setting of TGG.
Specifically, the main character of TGG, Nick Carraway, hails from an unnamed middle-western city at the beginning of the book and moves eastward to New York City to pursue the bond business. We will supplant this unnamed city with Chicago.
- To translate this into our new setting, Nick will originate from a colony in the rings of Saturn known for harvesting ice. This was chosen specifically as in the 1920s Chicago was primarily known for its gangsters and nightlife. Being a depot that harvests the precious commodity of water, this city will become a common layover in the Outer Orbit making it a central hub for smuggling and other illicit activities, reproducing these gangsters and nocturnal environment.
New York City on the other hand will be translated to a central hub of trade on Jupiter’s moon of Titan. When initially analyzing the text, I quickly became confused as to why Nick would have to move east to get into the bond business. After some brief research into the matter, it came to my attention that this ‘bond business’ was an earlier version of Wall Street.
- In this instance, I will deviate slightly from TGG.
