I found it to be an interesting choice in this novel to have the Zombies coming in from the west, considering the ending of The Great Gatsby leads Nick to give up on the culture of the East as it is morally crumbling and to head back to his Midwest routes.
Introducing a new plot line of Zombies into an original work is a fascinating idea because it makes it to where you are almost reading the book again for the first time.
However, with Westward expansion being a key element in the novel and the idea of the American Dream, I wonder how the author plans to stay true to the theme of the original while implementing this new issue.
I can not say for sure why the author has chosen to do this as I have not finished the book but it has piqued my curiosity. Will Nick become a zombie and head west, will the ending of the novel drastically change because of this new plot line, or are the Zombies a red herring?
I also find it strange how no one seems to talk about them except for Nick, this makes me think possibly the Zombies are a red herring in the book. However, I doubt that premise as the title is literally The Great Gatsby and The Zombies, which makes me believe the fact no one else is talking about it is based on the original attitude of the characters for carelessness and to run away from problems.
I wonder what will occur when the Zombies reach the Eggs and if Gatsby will end up being truly great in this novel. Will he die from Zombies instead of George?
This is what I mean by the concept can bring a novel you know so well and by introducing an impending doom element the entire novel is revitalized in the reading experience.
I think possibly the author will plan to make the Zombies not so dangerous, particularly because in the novel Nick states, “…unpredictable Gatsby. Alive, he would likely have invited the other species to his parties” (Soini, 10). This instead makes me believe the Zombies in this book are more of a metaphor, because why would human eating creatures ever be invited to be at a party?
This novel is hard to gage and predict because of the intertwining plots and makes me focus on lines from the original work more than usual because they seem to have a double meaning now. While I originally laughed at the concept and had my doubts I see the appeal while reading it and am curious how this story will unfold.
