Here is me at the holiday French club meeting. Look at all the tasty treats in front of me!

This semester, I embarked on my third semester (second year) of French language learning. As I am now participating in the “intermediate” level courses, I knew that I would need to work harder and dedicate more time to each class. Within my French course, I participated in a study group started by a classmate. However, no longer were flashcards and whiteboards cutting it; I needed real, active practice generating and listening in French. I wanted even more real-time experience and exposure to French culture. As it turns out, the French Club reactivated this semester, and I am now an active and happy member!

Meetings have a bit of a different makeup every time they occur. There is a different array of people who can make each club event, so we usually begin by introducing ourselves (in French or in English, as some people who attend French Club do not speak but enjoy learning about the culture) and grabbing some French-themed snacks from the snack table. Then, we will usually learn some new words through a Google Slides presentation, discuss any cultural events happening in Francophone countries, and then watch some videos in French. During the whole of each meeting, people are switching in and out of speaking French; usually, I try to communicate in French the whole time I am present, and I think I have truly improved!

After club meetings, I usually walk home and practice the new words I’ve learned, as well as think of new questions to ask my fellow club members at the next meeting!

Here is a screenshot from one of the meetings. We are watching a video by EasyFrench, a channel that asks French people about French culture and utilizes subtitles in both English and French.

At the holiday meeting, we ate merengues, stroopwafels, pancakes, chocolate, and vanilla chantilly cream cake. They were all delicious! I had never had chantilly cream before.
