Freewrite #4: Questions about PDG

Q3: Lord Harry and Basil are polar opposites. They truly only compare in their fascination in Dorian Gray. Basil is fascinated with Dorian; Lord Harry is fascinated with the idea of Dorian. Basil loves Dorian for who he is, Lord Harry loves the idea of who he can be. However, their roles and influences on Dorian’s life are what relates them to the idea of the double/doppelgänger. They both attribute to the two very different versions of Dorian Gray, that is, Dorian Pre-Lord Harry and Dorian Post-Lord Harry. In my annotations of PDG, I think I mentioned how Basil and Lord Harry are the angel and devil on Dorian’s shoulders (Basil being the angel and Lord Harry being the devil, of course).I’d also like to point out how Basil is seen as more “shallow” and “simple,” in contrast with Lord Harry, who is seen as “complex” and “perplexing”. Also, how Basil admires Dorian for his “simple” nature, while Lord Harry admires the new-found complexity of Dorian. I personally really like the interpretation of Basil and Lord Harry as doubles/doppelgängers. I like the idea that they’re doubles because of the roles they play out in Dorian Gray’s life. It’s almost like they’re a split road, and Dorian is the one who must choose which way to go. Split roads start together, in one place, and end up in very different places. Dorian Gray started this story with both Basil and Lord Harry, but walked a road vastly different from the other.
