Mannequins relate to Freud’s “The Uncanny” because its eerie to think that an inanimate object is indistinguishable from a real, living human. Shaping wax mannequins to fit certain articles or trends reflects the set idea that society has of women; the proportions of women’s bodies, how they should look when they wear certain articles of clothing, etc. It leads to the objectification of women. Some keyterms that create this sense of eeriness and uncanniness are terms such as “identical,” “real people phenomenon,” and “authentic.” These particular terms create a sense of eeriness and uncanniness because they expand on the idea that mannequins are so realistic they might jump to life any minute.
