PART I: Jordan Peele’s clones in his latest movie Us are failed experiments from the U.S. Government cloning project that wanted to generate subjugated humans as means of crowd control. They are tethered clones of the population, but since the project was abandoned they are merely living shadows who are forced to mimic their double’s actions, but without proper context or emotion. When watching the movie, it was uncanny to me that these clones could barely speak and their only purpose was to get rid of their doubles. The fact that it was essentially the goverment’s own fault that accounted for the murders of the people replicated was also uncanny. In BNW, the clones are the new set society, and are not failed experiments. The “Bokanovsky Process” through which clones are produced in BNW consists of human being bred. A “bokanovskified” egg buds, proliferates, and grow into a perfectly-formed embryo which will grow into a full-sized adult. These adults are separated into Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons. They are sent through an x-ray machine that arrests their development, so some groups are more advanced. In a way this relates to US and how the tethered clones were not given a chance to develop, so they’re not as intellectually advanced as regular humans.
PART II: Erasing love, romance, family, and so on erases our history as human beings in this world. If we didn’t have those relationships we would not be where we are today. This is where the dystopian genre sets in. Dystopian films/books are often uncanny because of their erasure of feelings and relationships. If we lack emotions and interactions we essentially lack what gives us life. Lately, I know Elon Musk wants to develop a chip we can place in ourselves to store our memories. However, how do we know that he won’t use that to send our information to the government, which could essentially produce clones in our society? Our world today also relies on technology a lot, and in a way we replicate ourselves on the internet. There are versions of ourselves on the web that we have modified to our liking. We have essentially created doubles of ourselves virtually.
