Today I had to opportunity to listen to my Presidents’ Community Scholars guest speaker. The discussion was over the importance of applying our “white space”, which is what is known as taking a brief time out of our day to pause and reflect on the “now” of the world, rather than being so caught up in asking ourselves “what’s next”? We also watched a video that helped us further understand how this topic is applied. For example, in the video there were many questions pertaining to if methods such as meditation, closing our eyes, or listening to soothing music was a way to apply this space. The true answer is that it is pushing aside the ideas of moving on to the next task quickly out of the way, and truly being intimate in the moment. I often find myself feeling as if I must be constantly being productive, doing homework, working, cleaning, etc., but in reality it is not only more healthy for the mind to reflect, but it is also a role of mental health and it is important to allow time to ourselves and being present. I truly enjoyed our speakers message and would encourage others to set aside time in their daily work to relax and give yourself some alone time.
