I chose to make a fun trip to the OU Art museum in order to take time for myself and to learn more about various pieces of art. I decided to find a piece that stood out to me and talk more about it. My chosen work in the Ascendant Exhibition is the American Indian. The reason as to why I selected to write about this piece was the pink background color that made the Indian stand out. Additionally, I thought the artist did an excellent job of implementing a deep creative twist on this work specifically due to the Indians’ face. The nose is the only attribute on the face that pops, but the artist allowed for the human eye to almost create their own idea of what the face may look like or what expression it could have, which I find fascinating. I would tell a visitor that this work is tied to the results of the “dehumanizing stereotypes” towards Native Americans. Lastly, I was also drawn to this piece because personally it seemed more “modern” and caught my attention with the vibrant colors used.

I would tell my friends and family about how this piece’s description explained that the warrior tradition is not only about combat, it also greatly focuses on military service, guarding the culture, protecting their language, and lots of other aspects that tend to not get as much recognition. In addition, I would share with them how much I appreciated this work and that I think it is very brilliant in the sense that the materials used was oil on canvas.
