The enticing and nerve-wracking movie The Visit by M. Night Shyamalan features the idea of seemingly fake “doubles.” In this movie, two siblings, Becca and Tyler, go to visit their grandparents, or at least who they thought were their grandparents. Growing up their mom told then she wasn’t close with her parents which is why she had never let them visit. However, she decided to give it a chance so she can go on vacation. While Becca and Tyler are there, they catch their grandparents doing many strange things, but they don’t think anything of it. However, as these strange things start to escalate, they get extremely worried and end up calling their mom to let her know what was happening. When they show their mom what the grandparents are doing, she reveals that those aren’t their actual grandparents. Becca and Tyler grow very scared and decide to investigate more and figure out what is happening. They end up finding their real grandparents dead in a large bin in the house’s basement as well as clothing that belonged to individuals who were mentally insane, the fake grandparents. These fake grandparents were posing as doubles of Becca and Tyler’s actual grandparents. Although mentally insane, they knew exactly what they were doing and aside from the strange things believably acted as grandparents. To Becca and Tyler, they were grandparents. This presence of doubles created uneasiness and suspense as the audience is tasked with figuring out what happened to the actual grandparents and what could happen to Becca and Tyler.
