In the twisted and enticing film Black Swan, there is a play on the idea of doppelgängers and the reality behind the horror they can present. The main characters Nina and Lily are victims to this doppelgänger horror. Nina’s passion in life is dancing and when the opportunity presents itself for her to become the lead in “Swan Lake” she is the directors first choice. However, newcomer Lily presents herself to be fierce competition. Nina is the perfect White Swan and fits the role quite well while Lily personifies the Black Swan. Throughout the movie the two fierce dancers begin to develop a twisted friendship. The competitiveness between the two begins to bring out a dark side in Nina. What furthers this dark side is the constant taunting that Lily begins to embark on Nina for her not being completely ready to play her part as the Black Swan which then transforms Lily into a Black Swan doppelgänger of Nina. This causes Nina to go insane and begin to start fighting her so called “doppelgänger.” This doppelgänger is the embodiment of someone Nina wishes she could be. Nina wants to be confident, sexy, and intriguing, everything she’s not, but Lily is. She eventually ends up stabbing and killing who she believed to be her doppelgänger but actually ends up being Lily. The doppelgänger effect created in the movie also alludes to other horrors such as mental disorders and sexism especially in the ballet community. The unachievable standards that drive an individual insane.
