The thrilling and terrifying movie Us created by Jordan Peele, features the idea of doubles and doppelgängers. In this movie, the main character Adelaide Wilson as well as her husband, son, and daughter, all revisit the home where she grew up. Throughout her time here, Adelaide grows extremely worried that something bad is going to occur. This is based off past trauma experienced in this house. Unfortunately, this worry turns into reality and her, and her family must fight to survive. Little did they know they would be fighting four individuals who looked exactly like them. This leads into the idea that these individuals are doppelgängers of this family. These individuals are referred to as “The Tethered” and their goal is to take over the lives of the Wilson family. They must do this by untethering themselves and setting themselves free. The ironic part is that Adelaide has been untethered the entire time and her doppelgänger “Red” has been playing the real her. Furthermore, this movie is related to the idea of “double consciousness” suggested by W.E.B. Dubois. The characters are of the Black race meaning the idea behind their doppelgängers has to do with the idea that Black individuals experience two souls, thoughts, and warring ideals in one singular body. Always worried about how others see them which plays into this explanation as to why Adelaide was paranoid and worried at the beginning of the movie. Peele was strategic in presenting this idea through the movie. The title itself “Us” is symbolic to how the U.S. perceived individuals of the Black race. He was affective in using doppelgängers to create a message.
