Mood Setting Mindlessness
Often, you find yourself watching a Television show as a mindless way to keep yourself entertained. However, the morals and themes of that show still influence your overall mood outside of the digital world. Watching a show like “Gilmore Girls” for me has served as entertainment and a motivating factor for my day-to-day life. The main character’s quick and witty humor picks up the seriousness of any situation throughout the show. Pairing with that, the ideals of entrepreneurship, academic devotion, growth over time, role in relationships, and recognition of mistakes all combine to form an enriching mood for simple entertainment.

Academic Success
Academic success and knowledge on their own is the most motivating factor for me from this show. The main character, Rory Gilmore, is highly devoted to classical literature and the importance of education. Constantly, her nose in a book and quick literary references in daily conversation intrigued me over time and caused my reading list to grow with her remarks. Not only does this show present her success through that commitment to academics, but also the occasional struggle. Whether it be too much stress, the overwhelming feeling you are behind, or even that you are on the wrong path- it is perfectly exemplified through her reactions.

“I live in two worlds. One is a world of books. I’ve been a resident of Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County, hunted the white whale aboard the Pequod, fought alongside Napoleon, sailed a raft with Huck and Jim, committed absurdities with Ignatius J. Reilly, rode a sad train with Anna Karenina and strolled down Swann’s Way. It’s a rewarding world, but my second one is by far superior.“

Relatability Over Time
I was about nine years old the first time I watched this show. My older sister and Mom were watching, and I tagged along, needing help understanding most of the references or concepts. However, rewatching it at different life stages has led to a new perspective each time. I finally understood the complications of pressure to get into College, High School graduation, moving away from home, starting College, etc. Overall, this has made me more appreciative of its wide range of relatability. It has also made me closer to my Mom and sister, giving us something to share that we all can empathize with.

“In Omnia Paratus”
While the proportions of this show’s following have grown massively, sparking controversy and stereotypes, my appreciation for its impact on my life has not diminished. Even my graduation cap was decorated with a quote from the show, “In Omnia Paratus,” meaning “Ready for Anything.” Yes, it may just be a mindless form of entertainment, but it’s also an influence you can choose to take away lessons from. Television shows shape our lives more than we think.
