As stated from the title, I did have a Great Gatsby’s themed prom. This all started when I was in my junior year of high school and just so happened to be in junior class officers. For those who don’t know, it’s where I help raise money to fund for prom; it’s not just a senior prom as it includes junior. We raised money in different ways like selling prom tickets at lunch, inviting food trucks on campus after school, and even selling donuts and coffee in the morning for finals. All the money goes to buying decorations, renting out a place for prom and even paying the DJ.

As we’re brainstorming for the prom’s theme, we happened to read the Great Gatsby in our AP Language class (English class) and agreed that it was the most interesting book we’ve read in our grade; this makes one of our classmate suggested in the meeting that we should have the theme be inspired by the Great Gatsby. We all agreed on that but when we advertised, it was called “Roaring 20s”, just so we don’t confuse students for haven’t read the books. The place that they rented out for the prom is in a Country Club, which was so fitting for theme, and I also volunteered to help decorate prom with the colors mainly gold and black with balloons, confetti and golden props. I chose to go to prom with tickets being paid for as I didn’t want to be left out; I decided that I should go with the theme of the Roaring 20s, from hair to outfit as shown in the image. Unfortunately, I was the only one at prom that went with the theme and even stood out like a sore thumb. The good thing is that I got many compliments from my teachers, my friends, classmates, and even the junior officers.

It’s not always sunshine and rainbow where I look back retrospectively. I did enjoy prom for only 5 minutes and then questioned “now what?” out of boredom. I did everything to complete this goal but was I ever happy? My feelings when being there felt so artificial and only do to please others. I never said that I regret being there but rather wished I didn’t feel so lonely and so shallow. Even though it is cool to have a Great Gatsby theme prom, I’m still grateful for that. Looking back without rose-tinted glasses, I still get mixed feelings about my junior year prom to this day. I don’t want to repeat the past of my teenage years, but it is possible that it could repeat itself.
