Jay Gatsby, who exactly is he? Do we even know? How was it so easy for him to reinvent himself and leaving his past with a big question mark?

If you have read the novel, which you should have by now that you are visiting my blog then you would know that throughout The Great Gatsby, Jay’s past is a pretty big question mark, no one really knows him. We get tons of gossip about who or what he is or has done, like for example, ‘Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once.’ (Fitzgerald). We see endless parties at his house with people coming in and out, some not even knowing him or have met him.

In the world we live in now we have the internet at our fingertips so if we want to find something we can find it pretty quickly. So looking at Gatsby from the world now, do you think someone can just reinvent themselves, never divulging their past and just living this whole new lavish life, with rumors about who they are and no one ever really knowing who they really are?

Or do you think maybe that has nothing to do with it? Maybe we like the mystery and it really wouldn’t matter if Gatsby was in our modern day and time and he would still remain this persona of a man who know one really knows, because we might be drawn to the mystery and not knowing. Much like those who attended the thrilling parties thrown by Gatsby, who lived for the gossip that surrounded him, “A thrill passed over all of us. The three Mr. Mumbles bent forward and listened eagerly.” (Fitzgerald).

So what do you think, Gatsby would have been found out in today’s world or would he have remained a mystery, much like he did during the time the novel took place?
