The Great Gatsby

Tom Buchanan

Tom Buchanan seems to generally be an unpopular character in The Great Gatsby novel, whether it be his, as some would put it “toxic male masculinity” or his constant adultery, but F. Scott Fitzgerald paints, at least I think a pretty good picture of him. The words iused to describe Tom are very descriptive and help create this picture in your head of what he looks like. For example “he was a sturdy straw-haired man,” (Fitzgerald), or “Two shining arrogant eyes.. dominance over his face” (Fitzgerald). From these descriptions of Tom, we can start to draw a picture in our mind of what he would look like and how he would act. Fitzgerald did a great job with presenting Tom in the manner that he did. This leads me to my next point, in the 2013 film of The Great Gatsby, do you think the made a good choice in who they casted to play Tom Buchanan? To refresh your memory of who they had play him in the movie, here is a picture.

Even if you haven’t seen the movie, is this somewhat of the picture you had in your head of Tom? I chose this picture because I think it gives a good depiction of the confidence and dominance that Fitzgerald gave Tom in the novel. For me, I think they did a great job casting him for the role of Tom Buchanan. What are your thoughts?
