Blog Post 3-1

In the world we live in today, we have become so consumed with technology and social media. I predict that my generation will be considered the generation that caused communication to change for good. Many people in my generation are so connected to their phones, they do not know what is happening in front of them. Communication has changed, becoming much worse. Think about the trend we have set. Most of my generation is bad at communicating and is attached to their phones. Think about the future. Our children will likely do the same. However, it will be more. Parents will be attached to their phones or devices and children will be attached to their IPads or other devices. They will get attached to these things sooner than us and it could be very problematic.

  1. Spencer, I think that Chapters 5 and especially 6 of _Kids These Days_ will help you in developing a more specific focus: look at them and choose one for your group reading project next week—try starting with 6.3, and depending on your particular interest in social media, go elsewhere in the book.

I will also give you a name: Jean Twenge, who is cited by Harris (and many others) on this topic….her (controversial) work makes an influential argument that social media use has a negative effect on youth mental health.
