In the book, Daisy Buchanan is described by Nick as an “elegant, charming and beautiful woman.” She wears white dresses that ripple and flutter and her face is “as sad and lovely with bright things in it, bright eyes and a bright passionate mouth.” When we hear this description, we have a pretty good idea of how Daisy looks and we as readers can make up our own image of the beautiful Daisy. In the most popular movie versions of The Great Gatsby are the 1974 and 2013 films. In the 1974 version, Daisy Buchanan, pictured below, has that elegant and beautiful face and of course the white dress. This depiction of Daisy in this film is one that we would expect and the casting and costume for her character were spot on. In the 2013 film, which is the most known by later generations, Daisy is also spot on. She has that innocent and timid look in her eyes, she is beautiful and once again she is wearing her signature white dress. It was actually surprising to me to see that the women that played Daisy in these films fit the description so well. For a lot of movies and shows, the writers will change a part of the description from the book to make it more appealing to the audience watching it. I am very glad they didn’t do this with The Great Gatsby because I feel in this book specifically it’s important to add in all the small and large details because it makes the story. The style back then was so much different than it is now and back then there were more obvious ways to show you were wealthy. For example, what you wore was a common way to tell if someone was wealthy. Daisy’s character was important to get everything right about it because without that elegant and beautiful look, and the white dress (of course), it wouldn’t be the Daisy Buchanan that we imagined in our heads.
