As the spring semester is drawing to a close, spring sports at the University of Oklahoma are starting to heat up. Many sports are beginning to wind down their seasons and make the final push into post season play. Here is a breakdown of what has happened so far this year.
We’ll start with gymnastics. Both the men’s gymnastics and the women’s gymnastics teams completed their seasons over the weekend at the NCAA finals. The Sooner women were able to mount a major comeback against Florida and they took home the 2022 national championship. The championship was the Sooners’ fifth program title and it was also their fifth national title in the last eight years.
The mens team also made it to the finals in their NCAA Championship. However, they were unable to get over the hump and they finished runners-up to the Stanford Cardinal. The Sooners have finished in the top two 19 out of the last 21 years. OU had a very young squad this year, so don’t be surprised to see the Sooners competing for a national championship again next year.
Next up is softball, and there really aren’t any other ways to describe this team other than utterly dominant. The Sooners currently have a 38-1 overall record and have been ranked number 1 for the entire season. While they are coming off of their first loss all season to rival Texas, Patty Gasso will get her team fired up again to play and get back to their winning ways. The Sooners have 11 more regular season games, including a highly anticipated Bedlam tilt to wrap up the regular season, before beginning Big 12 tournament play and NCAA tournament play. The Sooners should be in the mix once again in Oklahoma City for the Women’s College World Series.
The OU baseball team is off to a decent start this year as well. The Sooners have been playing an extremely difficult schedule this year and currently sit with a 21-13 record. Big 12 play has been a little rough for the Sooners as they currently have a 4-5 record in the conference. However, given how tough the Big 12 is in baseball, the Sooners should be able to compete for a spot in the NCAA tournament once the Big 12 tournament has reached its conclusion.
The Women’s tennis team has been on an absolute tear this year. Amassing a 25-1 overall record, the Sooners were able to capture their first ever Big 12 regular season championship in program history. This earned the Sooners a number one seed for the conference tournament and they should receive a number one seed for the NCAA tournaments as well. The OU men begin their conference championship this week as well.
Both OU golf teams are gearing up for their conference championships as well. The Sooner men have had another outstanding year and are currently ranked number one in the country. The team picked up its school record fifth win of the year over the weekend at the Thunderbird classic in Tempe, Arizona. The Sooners are looking to avenge a runner up finish in last years NCAA championship. The women are looking to finish their season on a high note coming off of a tied for ninth finish in their final tournament of the regular season.
All in all it is a great time to be a Sooner sports fan. All spring sports are having very successful seasons and they are wearing their university name with pride and representing. I know some strong finishes are on the way across the board.
