Last weekend was All Star Weekend in the National Basketball Association. The three days of festivities that take place during All Star Weekend run through the heart of what is known as the “All Star Break” in the NBA. This break is welcomed by many and comes at a time when all teams are over halfway done with their regular seasons.
LeBron James is no stranger to All Star Weekend. He has been selected for 18 straight All Star Games. That’s one for every year that he’s been in the league for those of you keeping track at home. Residents here in the great state of Oklahoma generally could care less about what LeBron says or does during All Star Weekend. However, for whatever reason, this year he decides to make a couple of statements that grabbed the attention of every Thunder fan across the state.
On the Saturday of All Star Weekend, the players that are playing in the actual All Star game on Sunday night go through media interviews. These interviews are usually good for creative soundbites from the players and are much lighter interviews compared to those that take place outside of the All Star break. When LeBron made his way up to his interview table, a reporter decides to ask him what his thoughts are about current Thunder rookie Josh Giddey. Which in it of itself is odd because why would LeBron care about a random rookie on a team that he doesn’t even play for. LeBron answers by giving praise to Giddey but then turns his attention to Thunder General Manager Sam Presti. Here’s what LeBron had to say about Presti: “The MVP over there is Sam Presti. He’s the MVP. I don’t understand his eye for talent. The list of talented players that this guy has drafted goes on and on.” Interesting things to say for sure. We’ll come back to this after we visit the next thing that LeBron had to say.
The second load of comments that LeBron made were made in a private, one-on-one interview later that day. LeBron was asked about his oldest son, Bronny James, and the thought of playing with him in his final season. LeBron went on to say that his “last year will be played with my son. Wherever Bronny is at is where I will be.” He went on to say that money doesn’t matter at this point and he will do whatever it takes to play with his son.
So naturally the conspiracy theories began to fly and spread like wildfire. People began to link these two comments together and claim that LeBron was all but confirmed to play for the Thunder now. I choose to believe that is not the case however. In the future, could the Thunder draft Bronny and get LeBron for one season as a package deal? Yes, that could potentially happen. With all of the future draft picks that Presti has stashed away, the Thunder could definitely make a move before the draft to get in position to draft Bronny.
But is this actually going to happen? Likely not. Personally, I think LeBrons’ farewell tour season is going to be played in Cleveland with the Cavaliers which means that’s where Bronny will get drafted to. So why would LeBron put Sam Presti on a pedestal like he did? I believe he was indirectly trying to take a dig and a shot at the Lakers General Manager, Rob Pelinka. LeBron has voiced displeasures with the Lakers front office in recent weeks so he could be making these comments as a way to gain more of a presence in that office than I’m sure that he already has.
While the chances might be slim, LeBron playing in OKC with his son for a season would be fun for all Thunder fans. It is an unlikely outcome but it is one that certainly doesn’t have a zero percent chance. Sam Presti is known for making big splash moves when people least expect them. Just ask LeBron James.
