For today’s blog post, I was influenced by a recent essay I did. In my opinion, after reading The Great Gatsby, there is one thing that stood out to me the most about the hidden truth of the American Dream. While having a very big materialistic possession is a good sign that you have achieved all, it can also easily take over a person and cause their downfall. In some scenarios, when most people get a taste of what it is like to have any sort of wealth, it is very easy to get caught up in the mindset of wanting more. This is very similar to someone already having a lot of wealth and materialistic possessions.
When someone like Gatsby has a lot of wealth and materialistic possession, it is hard to ever be satisfied with just what you have. You are always expecting more and more and when receiving the same thing at a smaller pace, the disappointment is present. This can lead to recklessness and more risks being taken to try and satisfy and meet expectations. While maybe to other people this was not the overall view of Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby, it is one of the main concepts that stuck with me. This is because almost anytime someone was shown to have any wealth or a big fortune, something always went wrong for them. Or, their attitude is very stuck up similar to Tom Buchanan. It was also a very plausible theory just due to the constant mention of wealth and a person’s materialistic possessions.
