This past week, while walking to one of my classes on Friday, I overheard someone talking about the American Dream and it has inspired this blog post. I do not know who it was. They said, “The American Dream is only about survival. That’s the American Dream”. I am not sure what prompted this person to say this, but as soon as I heard it, all I could think about was how true it was. For one, in today’s American society, there are still many people struggling and living in poverty. The journey to getting out of poverty is nearly impossible for some. Which makes it extremely difficult for those to achieve any kind of Dream besides survival. Poverty is not the only obstacle and reason for the American Dream being about survival though. In today’s society, it is mostly a person vs. the world or you vs. the government. There are many people that face setbacks and are at a disadvantage due to this.
To achieve anything over than survival, it would require an insane amount of luck and opportunities. As mentioned above, to have anything besides survival, a person would need luck or be born into a life where you are given many opportunities and chances to do what you want. Again, I heard this from some random person walking to their class. I was just inspired enough by what they said so shout-out and all credits to this person.
