Considering that “the Great Gatsby” was written in the 1920’s the women are accurate in that since, but two women like Daisy and Jordan who are higher class, would they be able to act like they do in the novel? The short answer is yes, however there is a whole cultural change to explain for these actions. The 1920’s was a strong period for women. Outside of the newly passed law of women being able to vote. Women used the 20’s as a time of experimentation for their looks. With the new and invigorating idea of being able to not just show ankles but also knees! There was also experimentation in haircuts, with shorter cuts coming into style. Makeup was another way women experimented with their looks. Looks that we’re more eye catching and wearing much more makeup than what was accepted in past years. The girls really are “perfect” for the time period however Fitzgerald doesn’t do a great job at explain the girls looks he does share what they wear and how they look in Nicks eyes but the explanations are so vague and honestly so hard to understand and it lead to me having to reread sections to understand exactly what the description meant.
Here’s a post from another blog, vintage dancer, that showcases the fashion from the 20’s that the ladies most likely would have been wearing, for a little bit of a visual aid
