The Strange Case of Emilie Sagee

Emilie Sagee was a Frenchwoman teaching at an elite boarding school in Latvia in 1845. She was newly hired at this school, and they had found information stating Sagee had worked at 18 different schools during her 16-year career. Although this fact was concerning, the school still decided to welcome her to teach there; a choice that they would pay the price for. Emilie Sagee would later go on to be known for having a doppelgänger that would randomly appear and scare those around her. The first evidence of this was while Sagee was teaching her class by writing on the board. What was described as an “entity” appeared next to Emilie, mimicking her every move. While the girls in the class began to become unsettled, Sagee remained unchanged, a fact that supported the notion that Sagee never saw her ghostly twin. Events such as this became regular for the students to witness, whether it was seen while she ate, spotted in a mirror, or in a completely separate space than Sagee. The most frightening case for the students was when Emilie entered a classroom to supervise, but the real Emilie could still be seen out of the window gardening. Despite all of these eerie events, Sagee always claimed that she had no knowledge of or power over her doppelgänger. Accounts recall that when Sagee’s doppelgänger would appear, the real Sagee would look very “tired and lethargic.” This supports an idea that the duplicate was in fact part of her spirit and had merely separated from her body. Another theory is that the doppelgänger represented the sort of teacher that Sagee wished she could be, actualizing the ability to do multiple things at once. Unfortunately, there is no clear evidence or general diagnosis that was reached for Emilie Sagee. Despite this, her story has remained fascinating, and unsettling, to the world for almost two centuries now. I guess we will never know for sure the true case of Emilie Sagee, but nonetheless, it is strange to think about.
