The author of the “Daily Me” briefly discussed the concept of chapter 5 in the Digital Literacy book. To sum it up, this section speaks on the idea of social media and the internet being personalized for every person. It says the differences between narrowcasting and digital, narrowcasting being shooting to target the individual and digital being the personalization you create, which is for you within the media. Both digital and narrowcasting are vast aspects of social media and the internet because you have so much freedom to create, post, and personalize your accounts, posts, and what you view.

The author spoke about three different characteristics of the Daily Me. These three characteristics are partnership, participation, and personalization. They described all three of these aspects of the Daily Me. The collaboration between the platform service provider and the end user, and how agreeing to a website’s terms and conditions is a way of collaborating because you agree with the website’s terms in exchange for using that website for your personal use. Next, participation, described as a direct result of the partnership, means that we are now provided with a space to participate and explore in return for agreeing to certain services to utilize a website. Finally, the final aspect of the Daily Me, personalization, which the author describes as only enabled by both partnership and participation, takes three forms:

  • Individualization (choosing what content to add to our social media).
  • Selection (choosing what content we want to see, along with others’ content as well).
  • Validation (determining what content reflects us the best regarding interests).

With all of this information being considered in the “Daily Me” idea, I agree with everything the author had to say. The author got it spot on because every aspect that is spoken of applies to social media and the internet being personalized for every person based on their interests. The concept of narrowcasting and digital media go hand-in-hand. I agree with the author’s point on narrowcasting and applying digital media to specialized media. Narrowcasting draws a person into different posts on social media that they might have an interest in, then uses the digital media to personalize those interests and chooses the way you share them. I also greatly agree with the author about mentioning the three aspects of the “Daily Me,” which are partnership, participation, and personalization. The author spoke about how they all go together, and without collaboration or participation, they would have no personalization, which happens to be the whole idea of the “Daily Me.”

Finally, the author discusses the three forms of personalization: individualization, selection, and validation. The author was spot on with their presentation of the “Daily Me” because these three forms fully and correctly describe the point of personalization within the media: to choose what content we want to post and have on our feeds, to decide what content we want to see and stop seeing, and finally, to seek validation with what we post, by posting what best reflects us as a person.
