Identities of Many

Today we are finally starting class blog posts. So, here is a self description and my blogging identity.

About Me: My name is Asher Smith, I go by he/him pronouns, and I am a language arts education major at the University of Oklahoma. I think soon I will minor in something related to art. I am the second youngest of seven but was raised as a middle child since four of my siblings are much older than I am and have their own lives and families to tend to. I really like cats however I am severely allergic to them. My favorite color is green, anything that is a nice shade of green has my heart and likely whatever money I have to my name. I really like music, whether it be the crap ton of bands I enjoy as a midwest emo and indie music nerd or musicals (yes I have seen Hamilton live and it was amazing). Speaking of musicals, I am an ex speech and theatre kid, I have worked in productions such as The Wizard of Oz, Matilda the Musical, Oklahoma!, Clue, Peter and the Starcatcher, De Profundis, and A Moments Pause. In speech I competed with dramatic interpretation, prose, and poetry. I also really like anything Garfield or Snoopy, they are lovely.

My Blogging Identity: I don’t want my posts to feel too serious, but instead feel like more elaborate shit-posts, yap sessions, even. I am not exactly a big fan of how people have been using A.I. simply because it should not do everything for you but instead aid and help you edit your work. I all around don’t really like how technology is taking over everything, and I feel like a grumpy old man when I start saying “back in my day..” when I start comparing mine and my little brothers school and life experiences. However, I think it is justified, him and I are only 8 years apart but his childhood is filled with technology when mine was paper and the occasional Bill Nye, Reading Rainbow, or Magic School Bus video. Saving the trees has taken a turn and is now filling young brains with computer screens. It makes me a bit sad to see how kids are now, they don’t go outside, draw, or visit with people. They simply crave a screen. Don’t even get me started on books and book bans. All around I think the world has changed far too drastically in the span of 10 years. I know I will eventully need to adjust, especially since I plan to be a teacher who works with these things every day. It is just so difficult to let go of the normality I am so use to.

  1. Interesting to read that you have so much experience in theatre and plays and you don’t seem to have an interest in blogging about that. Could definitely be an interest blog to read about different plays or musicals that interest you.

Oddly enough, I don’t particularly enjoy writing about theatre. I am more of a listen, watch, or act it out kind of guy when it comes to the topic.

  2. Asher, you sound like what I’ll call an “old soul” here–in the past, your attitude toward technology and change would have been commonly expressed by older people–but maybe the accelerating rate of technological change means that that opportunity to feel old comes more quickly these days?

I actually have a minor in art so I definitely something I think you should look into!! I also wanted to say I absolutely love how much detail you’ve put into this post, I’m very curious to know if you’re still into poetry as I adore it!!
