I Absolutely Implore You to Listen to Field Mouse

In the past year or two, there’s been a real resurgence in listeners for some of the great western shoegaze bands of the early 90’s. Cocteau twins, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, to name the big ones. But interestingly, the continued evolution of that dream pop, ethereal shoegaze sound has flown under the radar of most people. My goal today is to bring some recognition to one of my favorite bands that has carried that banner into the modern day, Field Mouse.

They come in with a whopping 1,000 monthly listeners on Spotify so it wont surprise me if you haven’t heard of them. but that’s fine, because I’m telling you now. My surprising discovery of Field Mouse happened when, on a vacation in Arizona I was at a record store and grabbed a vinyl that I thought had a cool cover from one of the bargain bins. That album turned out to be Field Mouse’s 2016 Hold Still Life.

When I finally got around to listening I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It was really, really, really good shoegaze. AND IT WAS MODERN. I also couldn’t believe they weren’t huge. Since then I’ve recommended them to a few friends and every time I’ve once again checked those Spotify stats and been astounded that they hadn’t changed. So now I’m recommending them to you and hoping those stats do change.

Seriously, if you like MBV, LSD and the Search for God, Cocteau twins, or anything like that, and you want to listen to something you haven’t heard before that keeps the same sound while being fresh and new, give Hold Still Life a listen with a nice headset. If the first song doesn’t hook you I’ll say I’m sorry.

Thanks for reading.

Ps. The Vinyl is mixed way better than the Spotify tracks. if you can find one and don’t mind buying it, I totally recommend listening that way

It’s always fun to pick one up with a cool or wacky-looking cover because those are always the most fun to listen to. That’s sick that you found a vinyl you like based on the cover. One of my favorite albums I started listening to doing this method was Soup by Blind Melon. Mmmm. I’ll give this Field Mouse album a listen today for sure.

  2. If the algorithms of corporate media won’t save Field Mouse, then it’s the old-fashioned open blogosphere to the rescue!

Btw, for the readers who see this: Spotify’s use of AI and their domination of the music industry could be a fantastic research project…

Interestingly, it sounds just a bit more monotone to me than the Spotify version. I’ve always felt like Spotify’s versions of a song usually aren’t as good as the vinyl or mixes that you can find on youtube but here that doesn’t seem to be the case. I’ve always wondered how Spotify does stuff like that (choose what mix to use etc.) probably not as competently as they could lol.
