As we all know Covid has had an extreme impact on today’s society. Since covid highschool test results have been on a steady decline. This fact causes people to wonder if this decline in academic performance is directly related to the Covid 19 pandemic. What effects have quarantine and covid 19 had on this generation’s youth? How has this pandemic affected the youth’s mental health? As a member of Gen Z, I can confidently say that covid 19 negatively affected the mental health and work ethic of today’s youth. I notice its effects on students’ work ethic every day and I fear what the education system will look like in the years to come.
For this research paper, I will be using sources from various platforms to help provide further details to back up my claims. The sources I use will allow the reader to see where I am pulling the information I am writing on. I will start by assessing the decline in the work ethic using an article that has collected data from the youth by way of a survey. This source compares the test score from previous years to the test scores after the Covid 19 pandemic. Since I am looking at how covid has effect today’s youth I will be using TikTok to get information from other people my age. I am also looking at other essays that disagree with my thesis to get the opinion of people with opposing viewpoints.
“Gen Z teens explains how the pandemic has changed their lives.:” This article is about the effects that teens are experiencing after Covid 19. It uses first-hand experiences from teens to explain the impact that the pandemic has had. It evaluates how the pandemic has affected the learning ethic of students and the decline in test scores. School districts and governments are already making critical decisions about the treatments and methods to employ in order to reduce the learning reductions that have occurred over the previous two years. This source is significant because it provides information that is given by other students the pandemic has affected. It allows the reader to get an inside view of the decline in student learning and work ethic. This source is credible because it has been fact-checked and has been posted by a very credible publisher.
“The pandemic has had devastating impacts on learning. What will it take to help students catch up?” This article shows the steady decline in test scores during the pandemic. It compares data from the test score before from covid and the test scores after covid 19. Interventions were put in place to help create a solution for the dropping test scores. This article claims that students and educators continue to struggle with mental health challenges, higher rates of violence and misbehavior, and concerns about lost instructional time. This article is significant because it provides me with charts breaking down the factors that could have played a part in the decrease in test scores. This source is a credible source because it has been reviewed before being posted.
“Gen Z most stressed by coronavirus, citing pandemic toll on careers, education, and relationships, poll says.” This article collected data through the use of a poll to examine the rise in stress levels during the time of the pandemic. According to the article when compared to millennials and Gen X, a larger number of Americans aged 13 to 24 believe the epidemic has made their schooling, professional objectives, and social life more difficult.
Have you ever considered the toll that covid 19 has taken on Gen z’s student body? How has it affected this generation’s ability to learn? How has this pandemic affected the youth’s mental health? Being that I am a member of Gen z I can confidently say that covid 19 negatively affected the mental health and work ethic of today’s youth. As a college student, I notice it affects on students’ work ethic every day and I fear what the education system will look like in the years to come.

When I was in middle school I had this really weird friend that felt like he needed to know every detail of my life. He would always ask me the most random questions. This time he had asked me what the most embarrassing thing that I had ever done in public was. I began to tell him this story. When I was younger my family and I decided to go out to the movies, which is something that we rarely do. We went to go see Shrek 3. We all went to the bathroom before the movie started; everyone except for my dad. He went straight into the theater. After finishing up in the bathroom I went to meet up with my dad. After spotting the first bald guy I saw (my dad is bald) I sat down next to him. I then proceeded to start eating his popcorn. The man next to me stared at me with a crazy face and I quickly realized that the man was not my father. My heart sank. I was so embarrassed.
In the classic 2000s Japanese film Battle Royale, As part of the revolutionary “Battle Royale” law, the Japanese government captures and forces ninth-grade students to kill each other. It illustrates a government that has no tolerance for disobedience and will go to great lengths to eliminate it, starting with the youth. The film has not only become popular in Japan, it has become a great cinematic attraction and highly demanded film.
Anne Allison writes about a film similar to this claiming “we too quickly condemn the popularity of cinematic violence among children, on the grounds that it leads (directly) to violent action on their part”. Though the film Battle Royale is extremely violent and graphic I don’t necessarily think that it is promoting violence, If anything it is showing you the negative outcome of the violence. I don’t think the film is popular because of the violence but rather the connections between the characters. The film allows you to get attached to each character before taking them away/ killing them. The suspense and high stakes is what makes the film so enjoyable.
One piece of digital culture that I would consider to be a classic is Donald Trump memes. Though these memes have been going around for years, 2018-2021 was the peak of the Donald Trump memes but I’m sure there will be more to come. During this time period, it seemed like these memes were universal. They could be Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and more. These memes had practically spread to every social media platform. This national meme spread even faster when these jokes were made about Donald Trump on SNL. Donald Trump had broke the internet with his memes. He was an internet sensation in 2020. It is argued that Donald Trump is the most photographed person in the world. Picture of him are photoshopped and posted Pictures like the one below would be posted everywhere on the internet. He was a digital classic that always supplied the world with content and new drama.
Even Trump’s supporters used memes to mock Trump’s political opponents. I look forward to seeing future memes when he runs again next term.
Hi I am Sloan Hudson. I’m from Leander Texas and I grew up in katy Texas. I am 19 years old and this is my first year attending college. In my free time I like to watch movies/shows and hang out with my friends. I feel that I don’t have much of a generational identity so I guess it is not that strong.
